To accompany the presentation of the publication project "Schrift und Staat", a book about visual identities of state-owned and public institutions, we designed an installation into our seminar room. Various symbols and visual identities got picked from the book and painted on the walls and on the ground floor. A black and white box to surround yourself with symbols of cities, governments, museums and regions. State in Space. The installation was open for public viewing during the Werkschau 2019 at the Hochschule Düsseldorf.

Is there a visual identity of the state? How does it look like and are there any design rules? What are national symbols – are they even national? Why do national flags or city emblems exist? Is there a typographical identity? Which typeface does the German Bundestag use? And how do state-owned symbols look in Asia and Africa?
